Academic integrity is at the heart of meaningful learning. It encourages students to think independently, express their ideas with confidence and respect the work of others. To highlight the importance of these values, Jumeira University will observe Plagiarism Awareness Day on Thursday, 22 October 2026, under the theme âBe Original, Be Ethical â Create, Donât Copy.â
The event will take place from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the JU Auditorium, bringing attention to the importance of originality, responsible research and ethical academic practices.
Why Does Plagiarism Awareness Matter?
Plagiarism occurs when someone presents another personâs words, ideas or work as their own without appropriate acknowledgement. It can happen when using published research, online resources, books or another personâs work without giving proper credit.
Understanding plagiarism helps students develop good academic habits and recognise the importance of honesty in their studies. It also encourages them to evaluate information carefully, acknowledge their sources and present their own understanding of a subject.
Be Original. Be Ethical.
The theme, âBe Original, Be Ethical â Create, Donât Copy,â highlights the role every student plays in maintaining academic integrity.
Original work is not always about coming up with an entirely new idea. It also involves understanding existing knowledge, developing independent perspectives, using sources responsibly and acknowledging the contributions of others.
By practising these principles, students can strengthen their research and writing skills while developing a responsible approach to learning.
Building a Culture of Academic Integrity
Promoting academic integrity is a shared responsibility. Students, educators and academic institutions all contribute to an environment where honesty, originality and respect for intellectual contributions are valued.
Plagiarism Awareness Day serves as an opportunity to reinforce these principles and encourage students to make ethical choices in their academic work. The habits developed through responsible research and writing can also support students in their future professional and creative pursuits.
At Jumeira University, the event reinforces the importance of approaching learning with integrity, taking ownership of one’s work and recognising the value of original thought.
